Council Rundown

June 27th

The Regular Meeting of Council on June 13th was preceded by a Special Meeting for a presentation from auditor Tiffany Ceccheto, KPMG who presented the Town’s consolidated financial statements.

The Regular Meeting of Council was brief and featured two items, the approval of this year’s winter sand tender to Lathem Inc. in the amount of $48,600 and the acceptance of the Town’s Consolidated Financial Statements.

Mayor and Councillor Announcements

Councillor Hayden commented that it is very nice to see Council Members engaging in so many of the activities happening in the community lately and expressed her desire to be at more despite her work schedule making that a challenge.

Councillor Massicotte expressed his gratitude to the organizers of events for National Indigenous Peoples Day which took place at the track and field on June 21st. The events were organized in partnership with Noojmowin Teg Health Centre and the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation. 

Councillor Massicotte also expressed his excitement for the Splash Pad opening and that he has seen it being utilized already this week following the soft opening.

Councillor Kallioinen expressed his hope that all are keeping safe with the poor air quality experienced lately due to forest fires. Councillor Kallioinen expressed his enthusiasm for and the importance of topics discussed as part of ceremonies that he, the Deputy Mayor and Mayor attended on National Indigenous Peoples Day in Whitefish River First Nation on June 21 for a monument unveiling and commemoration ceremony to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Transgendered and Two-Spirit Persons. He further expressed that while he was unable to attend the first Makers Market of the year on the 24th, that he looks forward to the next few throughout the summer and that event appeared to be well attended and organized.

Deputy Mayor Kelly echoed Councillor Kallioinen’s comments regarding attendance at the ceremony in Whitefish River First Nation on June 21.

The Mayor also echoed the comments made by Deputy Mayor Kelly and Councillor Kallioinen. He expressed that it was an honour to be invited and welcomed in Whitefish River First Nation.
