Council Rundown

January 10, 2022

Consent Agenda

The first Regular Council Meeting of 2023 was quite brief. A number of standard items were approved as part of the consent agenda including the final passing of the new Procedural Bylaw which sets out the rules of procedure for Council Meetings and the annual review of the Corporation’s Health and Safety Policy.

Huron Central Railway

Mayor Gervais acknowledged the announcement made by Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra in Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday Morning (January 10, 2023) that $10.5 million would be invested for improvements to the Huron Central Railway in addition to a matching contribution from the Province and railway operator Genessee & Wyoming Canada for a total of $31.5 million. These investments will help ensure continued freight rail traffic between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

Councillor Duplessis commended the staff at the Recreation Complex for their involvement in the work related to the Adult Hockey tournament that took place over the holidays.

Councillor Kallioinen expressed his gratitude for conversations he was able to have with ratepayers over the holidays and thanked staff for their hard work throughout this past year. He also expressed his wishes that all had a restful break.

Councillor Nadeau stated that 2023 is looking like a good year and made mention of increased activity at the fitness centre, demonstrating that recent gym membership promotions have been quite successful. He also encouraged folks to stop by the Library to see the Espanola branded merchandise and was wearing one of the new hats available for purchase in support.

The Meeting concluded at 7:09 pm and was followed by a Special Meeting of Council where Council had a Closed Meeting to discuss human resources matters and a legal matter.
