Council Rundown
April 22 and May 1, 2025
The Regular Meeting of Council on April 22nd featured three substantive decision items and two proclamations. A Special Meeting of Council was held on May 1st for items in Closed Session.
New Council Member Appointed to Fill Vacancy
At a Special Meeting of Council on May 1st, Council appointed Lora Wahamaa to fill the Council Vacancy left by former Councillor Sandra Hayden. Wahamaa currently sits as a community member appointee on the Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee as Chair and the Espanola Public Library Board as a Board Member. Wahamaa will be sworn in at the Regular Meeting of Council on May 13th at 7:00 pm.
Re-allocation of funds for Marketing Projects
On April 22nd, Council approved the re-allocation of $12,000 from the signage reserve to be dedicated to support the purchase of computer & audio-video equipment for upcoming marketing related efforts associated with the hiring of a Marketing and Communications Intern (funded in part by NOHFC). Staff has opted to retire the LAD sign that was on Centre Street due to issues beyond repair with the sign. Part of the sign reserve was intended for the replacement of this sign, leaving a surplus of funds intended for marketing related purposes. The Town intends to undertake a significant effort in developing marketing materials for the Town and region over the next year.
Part Lot Control
A bylaw was approved to temporarily remove Part Lot Control for a property on Yusko Crescent which has the effect of permitting the severance of individual units within row housing for individual sale.
Land Sale for new Hydro Substation
Council passed a bylaw to finalize the sale of a portion of land in the existing Public Works yard to North Bay Hydro for $30,000 for the construction of a new Hydro Substation. The substation is expected to significantly increase the electricity capacity of the Town as it continues to see notable growth.
Proclamations
There were two proclamations at the April 22nd Regular Meeting of Council to recognize Community Living Month and Victim and Survivors of Crime Week.
