Flags will be lowered at Town Hall on Monday November 4th until Thursday November 7th in honour of Anishinaabe Senator and renowned Manitoba lawyer and judge, Murray Sinclair, who passed away on Monday November 4th, 2024. Sinclair, an Anishinaabee of Peguis First Nation, is regarded as one of the most significant advocates for Indigenous legal rights and for truth and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Sinclair became an associate chief judge on the Provincial Court of Manitoba at the age of 37. He was the province's first Indigenous judge and only Canada's second. Sinclair was appointed to the Court of Queen's Bench of Manitoba in 2001. In 2009, Sinclair was appointed as Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and presided over the work to document the history and legacy of Canada’s residential school system across six volumes and more than two million words. The 94 Calls to Action of the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report continue to guide all levels of Canadian government in their efforts toward Truth and Reconciliation. His contributions will forever impact the future of Canada's relationship with Indigenous Nations and his passing is a great loss from coast to coast to coast.
