Due to an equipment malfunction with the fluoride analyzer, the optimization of fluoride levels in the water supply at the Town of Espanola’s water treatment plant has been on pause since the end of May. There are no immediate health risks to the public. In accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards, the public is being notified when such interruptions exceed 90 consecutive days. Optimizing the levels of fluoride in drinking water systems is a safe and effective way to prevent tooth decay. The interruption to fluoridation means that residents who receive their water supply from the Espanola Water Treatment Plant are not receiving optimal amounts of fluoride through their drinking water.
